How Did The Iconic Brand REDKEN Get Its Name?

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Redken is a hair care company that was founded in 1960 by Jheri Redding and Paula Kent. The name Redken is a combination of their last names, with "Red" coming from Jheri Redding and "Ken" coming from Paula Kent.

Jheri Redding

Jheri Redding was a renowned chemist in the beauty industry, known for his expertise in developing innovative hair care products. Paula Kent was a former actress and model who suffered from sensitivities to the harsh chemicals used in traditional hair care products. Together, they set out to create a line of hair care products that would be gentle on the hair and scalp, while still delivering the performance that stylists and consumers demanded.

Their first product was a protein-based hair conditioner called "Cataphant," which quickly became a favorite among hairdressers. They continued to develop new products and expand their line, with a focus on using the latest scientific research and technology to improve hair health and performance.

In 1965, Redken introduced its iconic "Acidic pH" shampoo, which helped to balance the natural pH of the hair and prevent damage. This product was a game-changer for the industry and helped to solidify Redken's reputation as a leader in hair care innovation.

Today, Redken is a global brand with a wide range of hair care, styling, and color products. The company continues to prioritize science and technology in its product development, while also incorporating the latest trends and styles in the beauty industry. The Redken name remains a testament to the vision and partnership of its founders, Jheri Redding and Paula Kent, and their commitment to creating high-quality, innovative hair care products.

Redken added "5th Avenue NYC" to its logo in 2005. The change was made to emphasize the brand's New York City heritage and its connection to fashion and style. Prior to that, the logo simply featured the name "Redken" in bold letters.
